1) "Roof" -- As to roof truss design 1roof Pronunciation: 'rüf, 'ruf Function: noun Inflected Form(s): plural roofs /'rüfs, 'rufs also 'rüvz, 'ruvz/ Etymology: Middle English, from Old English hrOf; akin to Old Norse hrOf roof of a boathouse and perhaps to Old Church Slavic stropu roof 1 a (1) : the cover of a building (2) : material used for a roof : ROOFING b : the roof of a dwelling conventionally designating the home itself <didn't have a roof over my head> <they share the same roof> 2 a : the highest point : SUMMIT b : an upper limit : CEILING 3 a : the vaulted upper boundary of the mouth b : a covering structure of any of various parts of the body <roof of the skull> 4 : something suggesting a roof: as a : a canopy of leaves and branches b : the top over the passenger section of a vehicle - roofed /'rüft, 'ruft/ adjective - roof·less /'rü-fl&s, 'ru-/ adjective - roof·like /-"lIk/ adjective - through the roof : to an extremely or excessively high level <prices went through the roof> [roof illustration] Pronunciation Symbols A roof tiled in imitation of thatch at Croyde, north Devon, England Rooftops in Vietnam Snow on the roof The roof, the top covering of a building, is one of the universal structures found on all buildings. Its purpose is primarily to shed water off the building and to prevent it from accumulating on top. To achieve this goal, roofs may be highly pitched (sloped) or low sloped in form. Low sloped roofs are commonly found on industrial/commercial type structures. Pitched roofs are the primary design found on residential homes. The most common type of low sloped roof for industrial/commercial structures are the conventional built-up-roof (BUR), modified bitumen, or single plies (EPDM, PVC, TPO). Metal standing seam roofs are becoming increasingly common on low sloped roof assemblies. Residential roof designs in mild climates or where there is little precipitation tend to exhibit lower pitched roofs and drainage at the exterior wall; an example of residential flat roof is that of the adobe construction in the American Southwest. In northern climates, where temperatures drop below freezing, or in southern climates with high temperatures, the need for greater thermal resistance will dictate the type of roof design as well as the waterproofing membrane specification. In areas that have a high accumulation of snow, such as Buffalo USA or Montreal Canada, a minimum slope of 6 inches in 12 inches (6/12) of roof surface is required. Roof pitches may exceed 45 or 50 degrees. Cool roofs and green roofs are becoming increasingly popular, and in some cases are mandated by local codes. Cool roofs are defined as roofs with both high reflectivity and high emissivity. Green roofs have soil placed over the waterproofing membrane in which plants and even trees are planted. Some building styles, for example, geodesic and A-frame, blur the distinction between wall and roofs. Pitched roofs are often covered with asphalt shingles (in the US and most of eastern Canada) although thatch, wood shake, steel, corrugated galvanized iron, slate and tile roofs are used elsewhere.
2) "Truss" -- As to roof truss design 1truss Pronunciation: 'tr&s Function: transitive verb Etymology: Middle English to pack, load, bind, from Anglo-French trusser, trousser, from Vulgar Latin *torsare, from *torsus twisted -- more at TORSADE 1 a : to secure tightly : BIND b : to arrange for cooking by binding close the wings or legs of (a fowl) 2 : to support, strengthen, or stiffen by or as if by a truss - truss·er noun Pronunciation Symbols In architecture and structural engineering, a truss is a static structure consisting of straight slender members inter-connected at joints into triangular units. | The earliest trusses were made out of timber (wood). The ancient Greeks used truss construction for their dwellings. In 1570 Andrea Palladio published I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura, which contained instructions for wooden trussed bridges. A truss can be thought of as a beam where the web consists of a series of separate members instead of a continuous plate. In the truss, the lower horizontal member (the bottom chord) and the upper horizontal member (the top chord) carry tension and compression, fulfilling the same function as the flanges of an I-beam. Which chord carries tension and which carries compression depends on the overall direction of bending. In the truss pictured above right, the bottom chord is in tension, and the top chord in compression. The diagonal and vertical members form the truss web, and carry the shear force. Individually, they are also in tension and compression, the exact arrangement of forces depending on the type of truss and again on the direction of bending. In the truss shown above right, the vertical members are in tension, and the diagonals are in compression. In addition to ca..."
3) "Design" -- As to roof truss design 1de·sign Pronunciation: di-'zIn Function: verb Etymology: Middle English, to outline, indicate, mean, from Anglo-French & Medieval Latin; Anglo-French designer to designate, from Medieval Latin designare, from Latin, to mark out, from de- + signare to mark -- more at SIGN transitive verb 1 : to create, fashion, execute, or construct according to plan : DEVISE, CONTRIVE 2 a : to conceive and plan out in the mind <he designed the perfect crime> b : to have as a purpose : INTEND <she designed to excel in her studies> c : to devise for a specific function or end <a book designed primarily as a college textbook> 3 archaic : to indicate with a distinctive mark, sign, or name 4 a : to make a drawing, pattern, or sketch of b : to draw the plans for <design a building> intransitive verb 1 : to conceive or execute a plan 2 : to draw, lay out, or prepare a design - de·sign·ed·ly /-'zI-n&d-lE/ adverb Pronunciation Symbols All Saints Chapel in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The building structure and decorations are both examples of design. A drawing for a booster engine for steam locomotives. Engineering is applied to design, with emphasis on function and the utilization of math and science. Design, when applied to fashion, includes considering aesthetics as well as function in the final form. Design, usually considered in the context of the applied arts, engineering, architecture, and other such creative endeavors, is used both as a noun and a verb. As a verb, "to design" refers to the process of originating and developing a plan for a product, structure, or component. As a noun, "a design" is used for both the final (solution) plan (e.g. proposal, drawing, model, description) or the result of implementing that plan (e.g. object produced, result of the process). More recently, processes (in general) have also been treated as products of design, giving new meaning to the term "process design". Designing normally requires a designer considering aesthetic, functional, and many other aspects of an object or process, which usually requires considerable research, thought, modeling, interactive adjustment, and re-design. - 1 Philosophies and studies of design
